But after more than 40 years mounting scopes, i find that vertically split rings inherently more difficult (but not impossible) to get level and mounted than horizontally split rings. But it will likely hold the scope tight enough to keep it from slipping and not damage the tube.

I find that same issue with all vertically split rings whether they are warne's, tally's, conetrol's , larue's , adm's, et al. As for lapping the rings, if they are new and of good quality, i would not bother. As for the base screw torque settings, i emailed talley yesterday to check, as the ring packet doesn't give a figure; This gunsmith tool allows the shooter to precisely tighten the 1/2 hex nut on warne tactical rings to the proper torque setting of 65in/lb. I’ve not seen or heard from customers that are having issues with not being able to tighten our mt tech rings onto their scope tube.
